Magellan’s short-term underperformance is so acute that it has rendered it long-term. Its flagship Global Fund now lags its benchmark on a three and six-month basis, and on a one, three, five and seven-year basis. Only over a decade has Hamish’s strategy delivered his fund investors any alpha: a modest 36 basis points per annum.
No explanation has yet been provided for the strategy’s sickly start to fiscal 2022.
Once you appreciate this, you appreciate that Magellan has become the most expensive ETF known to mankind, offering that warm feeling of investing with a genius but delivering investors a cold microwave dinner.
