Lithium batteries are falling in price every year. Soon they will be in wide use in a large number of households equipped with solar panels. If you look at the cost of batteries in EV's for example, you can clearly see where we are headed.

"if the cost per kWh is already US$137, with BNEF predicting it will hit US$58/kWh by 2030, it seem that when the current crop of EVs may begin to need new batteries, a price of around US$4000 ($A5,400) for a 64kWh Kona battery pack is likely."

An EV battery is of course not a home battery but once the volume of production increases we will see a tipping point. At around a production cost of AU$100 per kWh of storage this will make them a clear winner.
