"herd immunity" is when all the community has attained a suitable and long-lasting immune response to an infection. this used to be attained by everybody getting sick with many dying, but since the advent of vaccines herd immunity can be acquired by triggering the immune system to prepare for a given virus infecting the host thereby saving a very large proportion from getting ill and dying.
we are nowhere near herd immunity in Aus and even in EU/UK the community immune response is yet still inadequate to claim herd immunity.

I've worked my career in health and frequently cared for people with viral infections and do copious research into covid and vaccines. I don't know all the answers but its easy to find real information on these matters.... and fortunately for me I find research and empirical data easy to understand and interpret.
what do you think happened to smallpox? tuberculosis (in Aus at least)? what has happened to Hep B and C and HIV..... medical advances in anti-viral medications and vaccines have controlled these infections along with polio and many other disorders. These are herd immunity examples.
