While J Capital's short report on Vulcan was available for public view, most activist's short reports are sent out to paid members only. Likely, there are many 'Short and Distort' campaigns out there. I suspect that the entities/funds that commission these campaigns profit in early by taking out the shorts early while the SP is high and covering their position early by buying the stock back when the SP drops due to a large number of individual investors shorting it and some scared shareholders selling out. These false campaigns on genuinely well-performing companies will put the leftover short investors (those who believe the campaigners that the company is no good) in dire straits, with the rising SP potentially wiping out their accounts. Many get the news late and still jump on board when the big players have already left and moved on to other stocks. These late arrivals are the reason for the lengthy ripples. They are unable to accept that their advisors fed them BS.
