"Committee majority will have referendum on uranium law

    November 9, 2021 · 05:41 by Ane-Marie Petersen, Mathies Hvid Toft

Just before the third and final reading in Inatsisartut, a committee majority has tabled two amendments to the Naalakkersuisut's bill against uranium.

A referendum on uranium is to be held. It wants a majority in the Business and Mineral Resources Committee at least.

This is reflected in two amendments tabled by the Naalakkersuisut Support Party, Atassut, with the support of Siumut in the Committee.

In relation to the urande debate, the support party Atassut is in the middle, neither for nor against. The party wants to send the uranium issue to a referendum before Inatsisartut adopts a ban on the radioactive element.

Naalakkersuisut will have zero tolerance for uranium left.
Zigzag course is bad for the country

Atassut's party chairman, Aqqalu Jeremiassen, believes that a possible zigzag course on uranium policy will harm the country in the long run.

    - If we continue in that way (with a ban and not a ban, ed.), We will damage the country's credibility. With a referendum, we can ensure that the opinion of the population is heard, and we get the matter decided once and for all, he says to KNR.

However, Siumut and Atassut also propose that section 2 be removed from the Naalakkersuisut bill. Atassut and Siumut do not want the Naalakkersuisut to be able to go it alone on major questions about the raw materials policy.

That section gives the Naalakkersuisut the power to also ban other radioactive substances, such as thorium.
    Can be adopted without amendment

Although a majority in the Business and Mineral Resources Committee will have the two amendments voted through, it is doubtful that this will happen.

Naalakkersuisut has a majority in Inatsisartut, and can therefore pass it without Siumut, Atassut and the Democrats.

The bill, which is to set a minimum limit for uranium, is the Naalakkersuisut's big election promise, and they are therefore expected to adopt the bill."
