A quick crack at answering you question. Chart information is never wrong, as you alluded to earlier, it is simply data. It is the human interpretation of the data, and the decisions made on the basis of the interpretation, that are can be wrong or right depending on the outcome of where the stock moves.

Using one particular interpretation, known as fibonnaci analysis (again available on the net), one could make the observation that if RIO closes below $35.90, it will move much lower. Then you can place a trade on this basis.
