Thanks for the prompt reply. For those coming from a background in medical research I suppose it wouldn't seem out of the ordinary for the types of underhanded tactics to be present in publications. Before RAC I would read research publications on face value, but there is much more happening under the surface than the layperson realises!
Omission of critical information, unnecessary self-citation, pursuing funding over progress, author order dispute... unfortunately the medical research community is not all on the same team.
