There is a myriad of ways to short a stock - options, CFDs... warrants... futures...
It's merely a benefit from a stock falling.
The aspect of borrowing stock to sell and buy back cheaper is often limited to institutional investors...
It's just a common misunderstanding - mainly because the practice of borrowing stock - selling - and then buying back garners the most attention (ire) of others.
