I think the truth is whatever credibility and possible attraction "one country two systems" might have had for Taiwanese people went up in smoke with Xi's repressive tactics in Tibet, Xin Jiang and Hong Kong.
Simply they don't want to be ruled by the Orwellian CCP who they fled from in the first place. It would take a regime change in mainland China for them to reconsider it.
Meantime they will defend their island, whatever the cost may be, along with the China's other neighbours whose territory in the South China Sea the CCP also seeks to covet.
China has no friends under Xi.
