The shorts are not letting WBC and CBA go by the look of the market action today. The truth is that the shorts are riding on a tiger's back and will put up a fight to stay on and hope that the retail longs will crash and sell the shares at dirty cheap price for them to cover. They will try to keep this low as long as they can until they run out of firepower. Eventually, they have to give up and cover or just sit watching the shares going up on low volume and suffer a slow burn. When we see WBC jumps 3%-5% in a day, that's when the shorts rush to cover.
