Staking means you have a certain amount of $$ in one coin and you decide how long you would like to hold it for on that platform/exchange say 3 months + and you get a certain amount of interest on that particular coin the longer you hold it.
I have seen some in the past with a 17% interest rate!
I haven't tried it either, but a lot of people are doing it. Beats the banks!!
