camlacherin, Most who pose the question dont know much about UCG. Long wall mining is a closer to the surface than UCG, hence the effects longwall mining 'can' have on the surface.
UCG on the other hand is a 'lot' deeper (it actually needs to be to keep the pressures right). The reason UCG has a massive future is the energy it extracts from the coal is too deep or uneconomical for underground longwall mining.
So in summary the risks are so minimal its should'nt really be a concern at all. But it will take 'time' for the 3 main UCG players to prove this through their trials and enviroment impact statements etc.
