I felt the same way you do about driving a vehicle for which I was not in control. However, when I saw this particular video (sponsored by Waymo, as the creator discloses) a few months ago, considered the benefits that it offers, and additionally, how it solves the "human driver" problems, I began to rethink whether or not I could trust the technology.

In my daily commute, I see angry people, speeding people, people distracted on their phones (even still when we have laws against that), people eating food, putting on makeup, weaving in and out of traffic in ways that would scare me, not using proper signaling, etc.

Not everyone drives that way, but it certainly is prolific in the area in which I live. It's too easy to get a license and the tests are nowhere near as difficult to pass as they are in other countries.

When you see the collective experience in which the car learns to do its driving, the number of various scenarios in which is AI is trained as well as being comforted by the fact that the AI is (hopefully) being programmed to follow the rules and not try to skirt around them endangering others, I might actually feel better riding in one of these things than a car with a distracted driver.
