I don't think there is any real need to make it 5 mins before a race jumps or 30 mins.

As long as you post your bet/s before a race jumps. And we can all tell if that occurs by checking the time of a post.
However 5 mins before is also fine but sometimes I don't decide until near start time as things happen before a race to make you change your mind about a runner (eg. it pours down rain, or the horse gets flighty going into the stalls).
