    Don't be confused by comparing to oil and gas wells, the 500m is the depth of these particular coal seams, they only need to go to coal past 400m for CSG whereas traditional oil and gas wells are much deeper.
    Any shallower and there is not enough of a "barrier" or pressure for the CSG to be retained within the coal from what I understand.
