Have you considered what people working in the trades get paid these days? More than most white collar jobs.Add to that, instead of racking up uni/college debt during their course, trade apprenticeships 'earn while they learn', so at the end they not only have a job, but no massive (education-based) debt.
One thing to also consider. During this pandemic (and anything similar down the track), what sectors/services have been considered 'essential'? Being in a trade saw those folk's businesses explode.
People might look down their nose at trades, but when s**t hits the fan and you need something done...?
That, and the infrastructure that everyone so enjoys (or takes for granted) was built by those very trades.
