I agree that the GFC was a big factor; however, that is part of business life. I spend a lot of tie reading crappy small cap companies annual reports hoping to find a gold mine somewhere. All the distressed ones like to say we didnt know the GFC eas going to occur, which I think is rubbish. Just a good excuse for them.
It is a testament to WES that the GFC really hasnt hurt them too much except maybe paying too much for Coles at the time and having to raise capital at a discount to the companies long term value.
That said, if they turn the ship around as I think they will then yes it will be a company maker (again) as was their move into fertilisers in the 80s and Bunnings in the 90s.
