Not exactly sure how it works, but with Interactive Brokers you just allocate the shares. having done that, I can still trade them. That doesn't make sense of course, so I guess that IB and maybe others only actually commit shares of their clients closer to the deadline?. Broker's interest to keep trading options open as long as possible I guess. Could be wrong though..
