Not at all, it depends on the leverage you use.
Assuming a share price of $20 for simplicity, no dividend or other costs:
- I could short 1 FMG share with $500 and survive until the share price reaches $520 per share.
- I could short 100 FMG shares with $500 and survive until the share price reaches $25 per share.
- I could short 1000 FMG shares with $500 and survive until the share price reaches $20.50 per share.
Shorting isn't as sophisticated as you think it is.
