The selection of Petratherm and Geodynamics was not unexpected, despite the latter's recent well blowout, as these are the only two geothermal companies that have managed to drill wells.

However, the choice of Geodynamics for a $90m grant does create the bizarre prospect of a $300m, 25MW plant being built in the middle of the desert with no connections and no customers, apart from the small settlement of Innamincka. The company's resource is located in the Cooper Basin, far from the national grid, and it knows it cannot get finance for transmission lines until its technology has been proven on a commercial scale."
