Political uncertainty in Chile, with the world’s largest lithium reserves, has created higher values for mining shares everywhere else in the world. I could start a company called “My Backyard Lithium” and see its share price double in a few months.

What I don’t understand is why people see higher lithium prices as positive news. It just accelerates the coming lithium glut, as current miners increase production and those without regulatory delays move faster to production in 2024 and 2025. Even AZL groupies don't expect product until 2026. Scientists found a way to produce lithium from seawater at no net cost, back when the price was half what it is now. It hasn’t been done yet on an industrial scale, but neither has production from claystone.

Matt Bohlsen of Seeking Alpha is out with an updated list of five lithium producers most likely to increase production by 2025; another five juniors “with significant expansion potential;” and 16 “Some other juniors with potential.” No, AZL is not on any of those lists. Some of them I hold; and then I own others that I think are better choices.
