The reservoir couldn't be shallower enough to make a difference to how early they hit it. An hour or two maybe. I'd say they have either hit the reservoir or are expecting to do so today. They won't have wireline logs or any testing yet but would have drilling break, mud log lithology and presence or absence of hydrocarbon shows. Given this is a well understood field that's probably enough to know if it's a hit or a miss.
