Yes you can be rejected because one of your earlier patents covers the same invention. If that happens it is not a bad thing.
The basic problem when you submit a patent is you don’t know what claims will make it through the patent process. It can make sense to submit two similar patents applications and see what sticks after the process. More than once patent claim has been blocked on one patent, but granted on another patent processed by a different examiner. Such is the wonders of the patent system.
