Good thing to read that in the Swedish press. It makes it easier for the local people to draw the right conclusions.

"Tesla in historic deal forAfrican battery minerals

    PUBLICERAD 2022-01-16

Tesla has reached an agreement to buy almost all the production of one of the world's largest graphite mines. The deal is believed to be the first of its kind, and is seen as a major piece of the puzzle as the electric car industry tries to secure minerals without relying on China.

The US carmaker is to buy 80% of the output of the Balama mine in Mozambique, which is owned by Australian company Syrah and produces 350 000 tonnes of raw graphite a year.

In refined form, graphite is one of the main ingredients in batteries, which are now found in all sorts of devices around us. The battery in an electric car can contain around 50 kilos of graphite.

One uncertainty is that Balama is located in Cape Delgado, a province ravaged by an extremist Islamist insurgency.

As with many other minerals, China dominates the graphite market. But graphite, one of the oldest minerals in the universe, is mined in many countries. There are also deposits in Sweden. what.png

Tesla alone is producing a million electric cars a year, and will soon open two more large factories, while older beasts like VW and Toyota are converting to electric power.

    - They can never get enough batteries, Simon Moores of analyst firm Benchmark Mineral Intelligence tells AP news agency."
