I always thought they were good to mine too. As you said they though, it would have had to of been an underground mine from a certain depth.
I was always a bit confused why mining stopped almost as soon as it started. I think as you said they rushed in with not too much thought involved.
The gold though was in large quantities in the quartz. I remember panning a few of the RC samples where ever the quartz was intersected and there was always gold to be found.
