Butcherboy, It is flattering to think that other nations would be influenced by our example, however I don't believe it. We should do what is responsible on the merits of the action.
It is self indulgent to preen on the public stage, looking over our shoulder to see who is watching, as if we are some sought of international catwalk model.
Many people know nothing of Australia and don't care what happens here. There is no example of other nations feeling obliged to follow Australia's policy lead. We are only 'a legend in our own lunchtime'.
Those politicians who are concerned for our international image seem to have self interest in their mind. They want to retire to high profile, no accountability or responsibility UN positions.
We need to keep ourselves in perspective. Australia is a small economy with little influence. Our politicians like to preen on the international stage and be photographed with major leaders. They are barely tolerated with amusement like yapping terriers.
The idea that we are a 'rich, developed country' compared with the likes of China is also self indulgent. China is growing much quicker than us. Anyone going through Sydney and Beijing airports will be able to tell you which is the developed country.
China has Nuclear power stations, high tech military, major infrastructure. It is buying up Australian mining companies.
I don't believe China or any other country will feel obliged to follow our lead.If we are going to go 'over the top' first as some sought of example we will be laughed at as foolish rather than followed as heros.
