The DFS for Vittangi project is based on open pit mining of the Nunasvaara South deposit, at rate averaging about 100ktpa ore (subject to permit approval). A significant amount of the deposit starts right at the surface. From the DFS:
I think any expansion beyond the Vittangi project will have to be underground, both for logistical and permitting reasons (eg the Niska scoping study for 400ktpa was based on underground mining). Even the extension to Nunasvaara South is pretty deep based on these results published today. I guess it's possible Nunasvaara East could be open pit if the deposit is near the surface, will have to wait a couple of weeks for the results.
