It's impossible to properly answer in a post or three, but briefly, by the end of WW2 the US was the sole major imperialist power on earth and they put economic and strategic and political arrangements in place to ensure that and profit from it.
The US dominated Europe and the Pacific and the post war boom ensued.
But the two area's of the planet which the US could not dominate and profit from was the USSR/Eastern Europe and China.

Imperialism cannot rest, it must always expand and the US never gave up on being able to directly exploit and profit from the vast landmass, resources, markets and cheap labor that is Russia and China. Russia mainly for the vast untapped resources and China because it is now an economic competitor.

Plenty of strategies in play.
Claim Russia is about to invade Ukraine and prepare a whole raft of financial and economic sanctions to bankrupt the Russian state.
Encourage Ukraine to attack crimea or the breakaway's to suck Russia into an expensive war of attrition and impose all the sanctions .

Just place tremendous pressure on Russia and see what breaks ? Maybe the oligarchs will replace Putin with someone more inclined to grovel to US interests ?
Start a "color revolution" to overturn the Russian government ?, encourage separatists and breakaway regions ?
Nuke a few Russian cities and see if they just give up ?
Anything and everything is on the table.
