Our planet can easily support the current population, and even more, if technological progress and social changes are to come in place. The ONLY 'problem' is keeping the current political status and control over larger masses.
Note: all energy and minerals consuming countries are declining in population. Were the growth is, the people are living on the basic minimum - hardly any burden for the planet! So there is some BALANCE in the picture. Slowing the development, going back to the dark ages is not going to solve the problems. Progress is the only solution.
