Many varied variables could come into play in the experimental vs placebo effects in a trial such as this.
IMO, without going into what these effects may or may not be this trial was ideally suited to the two double blinded arms.
The (very) impressive statistical difference between these arms, in favour of the experimental, strongly suggest to me that the treatment significantly modifies baseline behaviour and (as it should be) the placebo did not.
Perfect result if you believe in placebo controlled trials.
