Always useful to pull up past announcements , thanks @ssyd . Have to keep an eye on the strategy and then things become clearer.

The 12CQ is aimed at implementation on a chip. AXE is going ahead with a solid state system which affords easy scalability with well known manufacturing techniques. This solid state room temp system employs another well established technique ESR to detect spin with enough precision. These are all major advantages in going this route. The qubit decoherence times do suffer with solid state implementations but with current advances as long as decoherence times are slightly longer than gate operation times, you get a useful result. Also you can have one qubit and two qubit gates that do simple transformations which may be all that's required at the quantum end of the chip. The number 1 practical requirement for a physical quantum information processing system is rapid scalability. Decoherence times are a bit lower down the list of priorities. Further error correction can be done with algorithms to mitigate decoherence.

All in all, a bit of reading and things fall into place enough to know that AXE is being smart with its options.
