Maybe it's hydrogen, however it's not the normal isotope of hydrogen (1H) it's actually deuterium (2H) and tritium (3H) - To produce tritium (3H) you need a nuclear (fission) reactor to bombard 6Li (an isotope of Lithium) with neutrons (as happens in a hydrogen and boosted atomic) weapon. As you say this "breakthrough" is only sustaining the thermonuclear fusion reaction for 5 seconds - still a long way from sustainable fusion with net production of energy. Even if this happens (2050's) it will be expensive to build (massive cryogenic magnets required) and only suitable for large sites - it will not be competition to SMR's which are designed to be less than 300Mw. IMO the one to watch on nuclear fusion is HB11 (see HERE)
