If you get into a stock dirt cheap, that has a substantial resource - you don't need to hold 100% of your purchase, if any, until production. You've got a good chance of making hundreds or even thousands of per cent profit before that occurs.
This is also all about market psychology - greed and fear.
The greed occurs as the project develops/commodity rises in price etc. The fear is already there when you initially buy - otherwise the shares wouldn't be going for a song.
