Well, the US is obviously expecting NATO to be stationed there eventually. I think it was Latvia (NATO member) that has missiles on the border pointed in Russia's direction. A few years ago Russia complained that such missile launchers can take offensive as well as defensive missiles so Russia will have to assume the worst case.
