Have at look at the map from the announcement. You will see that, by transporting by pipe to Broken Hill and then rail to port, you travel away from port initially.
I think the pipe to port should be in the region of 300km max. I think comparing approx 300km of pipe (direct to port) to 60km of pipe + 400km of rail is definitely worth doing. Well done management IMO.
