Slavery is alive and thriving in the Emirates. In practice foreign workers have no rights. There is rarely any penalty given to employers for non payment of salaries, or beatings, or rape. Any foreign worker who protests is imprisoned and deported.

A mate of mine's wife went missing in Dubai 6 months ago. We don't know whether she has been murdered or sold into prostitution, or what. Nobody there gives a rat's. It's a common story. The couple have a little girl. Not good.
