It did happen. But that's not necessarily the whole story. He was placing charges on the bridge and died when the charges exploded while he was still on the the bridge. There were no Russian tanks on the bridge -- yet. So chances are it was an accident, but it looks like Kiev used his misfortune for propaganda and morale-lifting, as the yanks did with Pat Tillman.
