Just like your sink analogy, none of us know what the Russians true objectives are.
It's not 'the Russians' though. When you have a despot in control then it is all down to one man and one man only: Putin. In an autocratic state the people are effectively prisoners.
Putin has invaded Ukraine. You could safely surmise from that that he wishes to eliminate the Ukrainian government and install either a puppet regime, or annex all or a significant part of Ukraine, or a combination of both.
If he wanted to simply 'take a bite out of the east of Ukraine' he would have done so, but at the moment there is a 40 mile long column of Russian troops and armour which is heading for the capital Kyiv in the north west.
