The ATO have a term for that - wash sale, and it is a big no-no. Confirm this with an accountant but I believe you have to wait at least 30 days before buying the shares back to be able to use the loss to offset gains, otherwise you've unfortunately just triggered unnecessary brokerage costs... that is unless of course you never get audited, not a risk I'm willing to take personally.
