FWIW I think today is a day where it is likely there may have been some stop losses firing ( with either price, volume or price/volume triggers ).
Market action and volume can be driven by buy/sell decisions made by individual investors on the day or by pre-programmed orders with the triggers set days/weeks/months ago. Trading bots can also play a part.
