Ronsterm, they are subsidised in two ways - actual cash subsidies and tax incentives from the government for providing jobs and power (not very transparent I believe so difficult to get figures, but I have seen very large estimates quoted); and also (IMO) the fact that they can pollute for free. The latter I see as a market distortion rather than a direct subsidy but since renewables really don't have any pollution or waste it is as if they were subsidised. I am surprised you didn't know this. Anyway, I detect a loaded question so hit me with your worst shot.
