As SMS Group are one of the best in the world at designing and building processing plants with a light touch on the environment, it is possible that the combined assets of mine and plant will have minimal impact, (possibly less than the original).
For SMS to have agreed to stay with TNG after the move, they must be confident it can be done.
I am thinking the NT Government and CLC would have been consulted before TNG agreed to leave Darwin and certain assurances may have been given.
Why is it taking so long?
If you just focus on the decision to relocate the refinery from Darwin to Mount Peake, this delay is not abnormal for a co-located mine and complex plant.
I will just add, that there must be a benefit for the CLC for them to come on board.
This could be in the form of extra jobs or infrastructure improvements to local communities, especially for water and energy.
Some announcements to outline a revised plan would be good.
