Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors [0035] As used herein, the term “carbonic anhydrase inhibitor” refers to a class of agents that inhibit the activity of carbonic anhydrase, an enzyme responsible for catalyzing the reaction between carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid and subsequently to bicarbonate. The suppression of carbonic anhydrase activity leads to metabolic acidosis, and as a result, increases ventilation and oxygenation. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are used in the treatment or prevention of acute mountain sickness (i.e., altitude sickness)
