You are correct. The calico bag samples that lab technician sees have nothing but a number on them, usually ranging up to 10000-30000.
The mining company who owns the rock samples gets the lab to attach the results to another unique identifying number generally 8 digits long, "38103337" for example.
The results then get attached to the unique identifying number which the mining company can access.
