AFR Reporting. 28 March 2022. Regional unease rises over Solomon Islands-China security deal.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has held crisis talks with counterparts from Fiji and Papua New Guinea over Solomon Islands’ proposed security agreement with China, amid mounting regional unease.

The agreement has sparked alarm in Canberra, Wellington and Washington, DC, because of fears China could project hard military power deep into the South Pacific and potentially block maritime traffic between the Indian and Pacific oceans in times of crisis.

“We would be concerned by any actions which undermine our region’s stability and security.”
