Good post. My dentist is part of a long-standing clinic of 4-6 practitioners. There's some competition but I know they also discuss procedures with more recent graduates introducing new techniques. This does introduce competition but unless there is wide differential in price I suspect the main competition in that practice is innovation. There is now a 3-month backlog for the new practitioners while it's now often possible to get in with my old dentist within a couple of weeks.

One of the newer dentists has introduced a 3D printed crown while you wait and was quite open about the relative success of bonding for different approaches he'd used towards the attachment profile (to the residual tooth). The new guy also uses a mouth camera to display any issues on a large screen.

Presumably some of his earlier clients had been more successful than others....
