As someone in academia in one of these major Australian Universities, I find your remarks interesting and would like to prod a bit more on something you assert (unless you relied entirely on your mate's statement and cannot justify them yourself, at which point we'd conclude you made the logical error of argument from authority).
    You said
"Corporate academic cancel culture simply means anyone including incredibly intelligent scientists cannot get funding or have a job unless they proffer a pre-approved opinion on the issue..."

Supposing it is true that research is being directed towards "pre-approved" opinion, you do realise how easy it is to find flaws in such research right? Pre approved opinion is impossible to replicate, unfortunately because one has to arrange their scientific research in such a manner that it gives desired results (the pre-approved ones you mention). Consequently, peer review is impossible, or rather will throw such research out of the water very quickly as scientists from various parts of the world attempt to disprove, discredit or confirm findings of such research, which is what happens before research is published in journals.

Having said that, on the topic of global warming, thousands upon thousands of research journals have been published that converge on the conclusion that humans have accelerated global warming via carbon emissions. There have been beneficiaries of fossil fuel who have funded research in this field and none has arrived at a contrary position on the matter, much as it would be in their interests to do so. With this in mind, don't you think it's highly difficult that all these outcomes are a result of cancel culture? Is it a word used by those who find themselves on the wrong side of history to try and justify their position in the face of increased pressure from prevailing norms and wisdom? I recently saw Putin for instance saying Russia was being cancelled by the West, ironical as that may sound in the face of someone exterminating people. Anyway, I'm keen to hear what more about what your mate has to say about the prevailing research data behind this topic.
