Boulder Steel has begun negotiations with the Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) for shipping requirements for the proposed $1.2 billion steel plant.

Acting project manager Ross Johnson says talks are ongoing with the GPC to determine how many berths will be needed to bring iron ore into the central Queensland steel plant.

He says the ships used to export the finished product will carry about 50,000 tonnes of steel per load.

"We've just received our study that was looking at what size ships we would use to bring in the iron ore and take out our finished product to our customers," he said.

"The main vessel to bring in the iron ore will be approximately a 90,000 tonner."

Mr Johnson says a new type of ship will used to transport the finished product to the Middle East.

"The iron ore ships will be quite similar to those currently used by Rio Tinto to bring in their bauxite from Weipa but the finished product ships will be a new type of ship for Gladstone," he said.

"They'll have on-board gantry cranes that are capable of lifting about 50 tonnes."
