Mate its not that hard at all, the exact same effort in making a buy ticket, what broker do you use?
And to say its not rarely done at all is wrong, its done quite often at this end of town, very popular tool amongst traders.
I use invast and short shares all the time, its really easy to do. just a matter of opening up an order ticket and entering in how much you want to short , and even crazier you dont need to have the full cost amount to do it, you only need 20% margin, so half a million dollar short you only need $100k.
Here is an order ticket I just whipped up to show you how easy it is, literally just press sell order enter in what you want, its that easy. Here you can see 1 million sell to place at 3.4 would only need $6.8 k in the account to do so.
