To sum up this post, if we can get kilns away from diesel/gas, yes I certainly agree mining will be more energy intensive than downstream processing. However, the next question becomes is the capex spend for using kilns that are not gas/diesel fired in producing carbonate/hydroxide competitive to kilns that are gas/diesel fired as this is a key in bankable studies and in NPV/feasibility studies. Reading about the Calix technology, for example, PLS certainly thinks it can be very competitive capex wise to traditional technologies so that can only be a positive on reducing CO2 emissions in production if such green technologies do work effectively at scale.
